Sun releases MMRPG SDK (aka Darkstar)
Posted 11:46:28 AM on Thu, 20th April 2006 by Dj-ZoRt! Image #23

Sun has just released a free SDK for game developers to build MMRPG's atop. Its a very interesting (and exciting) move from sun to make a move into a market with huge potential. We all know and or are addicted to World of Warcraft, which has been by far the most successfull of MMPRG to date. Some of us recall the excitement and fizzle of Ultima Online and others. Diablo 2 was very close to an MMRPG and was extrememly successfull. I recal Everquest also having many die hard fans (some still).

Obviously Sun is wanting to cut costs on development and at the same time, encourage or tie customers to their server platform and therefore make money. Not that i have a problem with that as sun is reasonably good on the whole 'open' thing - although i few dollars in openssh's direction would be a bad thing.

Game developers should also be happy, as they may not need to learn the finer points of network tweaking as well as 3D programming .(and as we all know, DirectX and OpenGL are not the same beast on ATI, NVIDIA, Intel etc)

You can read about it http://www.sun.com/2006-0328/feature/index.jsp
It has lots of cool IT jargon like 'TCO' and vague comments like 'risk'.
